The development of electric aircraft had been considered
by military aircraft designers since World War II, but was
limited by the power generation capability and power
conditioning equipment [4]. Due to developments in power
electronics technology in the past two decades, high
frequency, high power, and low loss devices became
available making MEAs and AEAs feasible. Power
electronics filled many critical applications in the onboard
power system, such as
actuator configurations for soft starting, speed and
torque control of electrical motors,
converters used for AC/DC conversion, variable
frequency or constant frequency generators control,
and voltage/current regulation,
and solid state power controllers (SSPCs) for fault
interruption.

SSPCThe concept of solid-state power control in power systems was initially introduced in military aircraft and aerospace applications. The first SSPC demonstration was conducted on the aerospace demonstration aircraft X-33 and was first applied to the military aircraft Lockheed C-130J in 1995-96. However, the advantages of wide bandgap semiconductors have not been widely explored.
